Tasty Local Specialties

The traditional attractions of Yamatokoriyama are not limited to castle and goldfish.  We are proud to bring you the local food and beverages as well.

Thanks to the thriving industry of the olden days, various specialties throughout the country were brought into Yamatokoriyama, which refined its local cuisine. There are many specialties, mainly from the Edo period, which have been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. Some of them might have entertained Lord Hidenaga. On the other hand, new products such as fig wine were developed. It's quite exciting to imagine what specialties we are going to invent for the future generation.

Strawberry Farm--Hidenobu Yoshioka
The Man who Introduced the Raised Bed Strawberry Growing Method to the City
.
I have been planting strawberries for 30 years. In strawberry cultivation, growing plug plants is the difficult part. We must take care that they won't dry up or suffer from diseases during the hot summer growing season. I have been producing "Toyonoka," but I'm also planting "Asuka Ruby," a crossbreed native to Nara, for 3 years. The flavor is stable, sweet and pleasant, with no after taste.
In the raised bed method, seedlings are planted in a peat moss, an accumulation of sphagnum, which is set up at the height of the average person's waist line. This method has successfully doubled the harvest, and it has allowed easier access to the strawberries, since we don't have to bend over to pick them.
Oshiro no Kuchi Mochi
This literally means "rice cake in front of the castle entrance." The story has it that when Toyotomi Hideyoshi visited his brother Hidenaga, a bite-size rice cake sweet was offered by a confectioner whose shop was standing near Koriyama Castle's gate. The soft texture of rice cake, soy powder, and sweet bean paste melts in your mouth.
Local Rice Wine
Sake breweries in the city have been passing on their original tastes since the Edo period. Why not try "Toyotomi Hidenaga," the great lord of Yamatokoriyama?
Strawberries
Along with goldfish, strawberries have been a well-known specialty since 1917. The "Toyonoka" breed is the most popular today, boasting its sweet juicy freshness and ruby-red color.
